Hand painted illustrations of 56 ethnic groups from China.

The artist Chen Shu Fen (陈淑芬) is best known for her paintings of beautiful women and handsome men. She has worked on a project in which she painted 56 Chinese ethnic groups from China. Each staying true to their original ethnic clothing.

*drool* Chinese ethnic minorities are amazing. I wish our East Asian Studies department was large enough to teach classes on them instead of just the traditional Han narratives~~and maybe if they weren’t mostly funded by the Chinese government they’d be more inclined to do so.~~

Oh wow. This is beautiful! And something that should be shared around - I didn’t even know that there were that many ethnic minorities in China (I mean, when I thought about it, it didn’t surprise me, as large as the country is). Most westerners only recognise Cantonese and Mandarin styles. A lot of these looked Russian, Mongolian, South East Asian, South Central Asian, North East Asian, but with a flair distinctly Chinese to them. So beautiful.

On June 11th 1963, Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, sat down in the middle of a busy intersection in Saigon, covered himself in gasoline and He then ignited a match, and set himself on fire. Đức burned to death in a matter of minutes, and he was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by a reporter who was in Vietnam in order to photograph the war. All those who saw this spectacle were taken by the fact that Duc did not make a sound while burning to death. Đức was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm’s administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion.

As a Buddhist, this picture not only moves me but makes me question how the ‘advanced’ and ‘civilized’ world we live in has any room for prejudice. There is no reason any person should have to burn alive for religious tolerance.
